Bulwark Breakdown | Heroes of Might and Magic III

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon reviewed by George Yang on PS5, also available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Switch 2.

After its predecessor took a detour from advancing the Calvard saga in favor of a more interpersonal story, the Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon almost feels like an overcorrection as it weaves the plot-heavy stories of three different protagonists into a single adventure. However, splitting it into three distinct routes makes it all much easier to digest. While our main hero is overshadowed by the other protagonists early on, the story eventually finds a satisfying way to weave its paths together, and ultimately sticks the landing. The new mechanics in both the turn-based and real-time combat are also welcome additions that continue to refine a battle system that was already a lot of fun. And while its cliffhanger ending will likely be divisive, Trails Beyond the Horizon has certainly built an exciting launchpad for what comes next.

Things aren't looking good for Xbox on the hardware front. The latest sales data from Circana shows a massive 70% drop in Xbox hardware sales year-over-year in the U.S. To be fair, hardware sales for the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 were also down from November of 2024, but these numbers are especially damaging to Xbox. After years of fan requests, Blizzard has finally added the much beloved Paladin class to Diablo 4. If you pre-purchase the Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion, you'll gain immediate access to the Paladin class in Season 11. Between No Man's Sky, Starfield, and countless others, the space-sim genre has arguably never been in ruder health. But games that focus on space exploration have a fundamental problem: space is boring. 

It's mostly empty, impossibly, unimaginable stretches of nothing, full of empty, rocky planets of no interest to anyone except NASA geologists and associated nerds. One of Starfield's designers, Bruce Nesmith, recently said as much in a rare podcast appearance, admitting that Starfield's biggest problem is that space is inherently boring.

So, how do you fix the space sim genre? How can Starfield 2 be better?
